Mary Woltz, beekeeper and owner of Bees’ Needs honey company, will make the first of three presentations about the honey bee at Sag Harbor Farmers Market on Saturday, June 8.

The local apiarist will discuss the basic biology of the honey bee and what’s really going on in all those bee boxes. Woltz will explain why this small insect is so vitally important and why humanity has a stake in her well-being. Subsequent talks will cover the products of the hive: honey, pollen, wax and propolis, as well as honey bee health and some of the challenges facing bees, including diseases (varroa mites and CCD-colony collapse disorder), pesticides and loss of habitat.

Woltz is a longtime beekeeper who creates artisanal honey under her Bees’ Needs label.
