Make Your Hamptons Summer Rental Feel Like Home

Whether you prefer a seaside cottage, oceanfront mansion or village charmer, each option for a Hamptons summer rental will provide exceptional amenities and, hopefully, all of the comforts of home.

Most summer rentals come completely furnished and decorated, though some renters find that by adding individual style an immediate sense of home and coziness can be established.  For those who like to add a little of their own personal touch, there are five simple steps that can easily create the perfect summer oasis in no time. Remember, with a little imagination and creativity, anything is possible.

Step One: Décor
Personal style can be accomplished by bringing in a few tabletop family photos; a collection of books (summer reads, coffee table, photography, etc.) and the use of throw pillows or a favorite blanket/cashmere throw can create a sense of warmth. Bright colors and summer-themed prints are very popular.

Step Two: Scents
Certain scents like vanilla and lavender can help with relaxation and sleep, while other scents like ocean breeze, fresh linen and citrus offer an awakening aroma. Fresh cut flowers of all kinds are a fabulous way to make your rental welcoming. Whether you like to put flowers in one room or every room in the house, it’s always a nice touch. From roses and hydrangeas to peonies and lilacs, you can’t go wrong. Potted herbs like rosemary, basil and sage are perfect options for any kitchen. Arrange a fresh bowl of apples, pears, bananas and citrus to create an appealing look and great fragrance.

Step Three: Linens, Towels and Tablecloths
A bit of updating with the use of colors and prints can give a room a different and more intimate appeal. A set of your favorite sheets or beach towels is a plus, while tablecloths and placemats for indoor and outdoor use will contribute to a cozy dining experience. It’s an easy way to decorate without clashing with the homes’ decor.

Step Four: Outdoor Extras
Tiki torches, pool games, water fun (floats, waterslides, sprinkler games) or your favorite beach chair are just a few simple enhancements.

Step Five: Entertainment
A collection of your favorite DVDs and CDs, board games and children’s activities and games will provide endless hours of fun and amusement. This is especially helpful for the occasional rainy day.

There are many amazing local boutiques and home goods resources—from points west of the Shinnecock Canal to Montauk. In Southampton and East Hampton, Hildreth’s is one of the most popular spots to shop for it all. Specializing in indoor and outdoor home furnishings, linens, accessories and more, Hildreth’s offers a large selection of Hamptons favorites. Also in Southampton, and in Bridgehampton, English Country Antiques is another top choice for East Enders. Carrying some of the most elegant choices in home accents, furniture, fixtures and fabrics, the options are infinite. The Elegant John located in the Red Horse shopping center in East Hampton has been the “go to” favorite for fine linens and bedding and bath accouterments for more than 50 years.
