Riverhead police were called to the Peconic River Wednesday evening on a report of what appeared to be a grenade.

Police said that at 6:26 p.m. the object was reported in the area of 2139 River Road, Calverton.

Officers secured the area before Suffolk County Police Department Emergency Services took the object away to be investigated.

Police did not confirm whether the object was, in fact, a grenade, and, if so, whether it was live.
