Sag Harbor’s Billy Joel agreed six years ago to cooperate with a ghost writer to make his first autobiography, then killed the project in 2011, fearing it would be too revelatory.

Joel later had a change of heart and agreed to let the writer, Fred Schruers,  go forward, and the fruit of Schruers’s labor will be unveiled Tuesday when Billy Joel: The Definitive Biography is released.

The book offers the most in-depth look at Joel’s personal and professional history there’s ever been, going into detail on some stories fans only have a passing understanding of, and uncovering some long-buried stories that Joel has kept to himself until now.
