April 11 is National Pet Day, and we must take a moment to remember just how important our pets are to us.
Long ago, those who lived with a dog or cat in the home were known as pet owners, but that term would imply that pets are nothing more than physical property, like a car, or rather, like a Land Rover that won’t stop honking at the neighbor’s Prius. However, that term has fallen out of use in favor of the more politically correct term: pet parent. This term would imply that our dog or cat is like a baby and deserves as much love and attention as our human children. This shift in how we view our pets explains why we now see dogs in strollers, sweaters and rain boots, and why the New York State Senate is deciding whether or not declawing your cat should be illegal.
National Pet Day was founded in 2006 by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige, in an effort to not only celebrate the joy that our pets bring to our lives, but also to raise awareness for the abandoned animals in our local shelters, waiting for their forever homes. Today, we should think about volunteering at our local animal shelters or donating blankets, toys and food.
We should also celebrate how much our furry children mean to us. After all, they love us in sickness and in health, and they’re always around when we need someone to talk to, enough if they can only sit and listen. Today we need to pamper them to show how much we appreciate all that they do for us. What better way to spoil your beloved pooch or pussy cat than to get them a fresh haircut from one of the best groomers on Long Island?
