Ray Donovan Season 5 Trailer: What We Learned

Montauker Liev Schreiber‘s hit Ray Donovan returns to Showtime with Season 5 on August 6, and it looks like another thrilling turn for this very complicated character and his supporting cast.
From what we’ve seen in the new trailer, released Friday (watch it below), Donovan’s family is right back into his messy business, which includes another sexy young starlet named Natalie James, played by Banshee‘s Lili Simmons, and Hamptons visitor Susan Sarandon as Samantha Winslow, the powerful studio head who, it appears, is trying to keep James on task in a major, $3 billion motion picture franchise. Did she kill someone? Maybe. We do see a body being dragged away (0:18), just before Sarandon’s character asks—more like states, “When someone brings you into their problem, you’re discreet,” adding, “Whatever the fee is I’ll pay it.”
Meanwhile, Ray’s brother Terry Donovan, played by Eddie Marsan, is getting married, but a cop threatens to reveal an old secret may put an end to his time being lucky in love. What will Terry have to do to protect his secret? We’ll have to watch and see.
It looks like Ray’s daughter Bridget (Kerris Dorsey) is wrapped up with another probably shady older man, as seen with her in the bathtub (0:31) when she says, “My father knows a lot of powerful people, and he can be dangerous when someone doesn’t give him what he wants.” We don’t know who the guy is, but Bridget definitely gets mixed up into something bad because, later in the trailer, a very distressed Ray asks her, “What did you do?” In what is very likely the same scene, he hits his father Mickey Donovan (Jon Voight) with a bottle and punches his brother Bunchy (Dash Mihok).
We also hear about Ray’s father and brother being hospitalized during some sort of incident where Bridget ends up calling the police. No idea how it ties together.
Another things we noticed in the trailer: Ray’s wife Abby (Paula Malcomson) appears to have opened her own bar or restaurant called Abby’s. We see the yellow neon sign for it in one shot featuring Ray walking down the street at night (0:50), and we see another where Mickey is standing in front of the Abby’s window (0:55) while talking to crooked FBI agent Frank Barnes (Michael McGrady).
Watch the Ray Donovan Season 5 trailer and tell us what you glean from the footage. It’s going to be a great season, we hope.
