From Fangs To Fashion

Gary Lutz will be at the Rogers Memorial Library to talk about “Dracula: Fiction and Reality” on Thursday, October 24, at 5:30 PM. He will discuss the origins and early evolution of one of the most recognized characters in all of English literature.

Beth Fiteni, author of “The Green Wardrobe Guide: Finding Eco Chic Fashions that Look Great and Help Save the Planet,” will speak on Saturday, October 26, at 11 AM on the connection between the planet, the clothes, and those who produce them. She will also talk about organic and natural fabrics, how to extend eco-fashion to our housewares and body products, and where to find sustainable fashions.

“Drawdown: An Introduction” on Monday, October 28, at 10:30 AM, followed by “Drawdown: Solutions” at 11:30 AM, comes from Paul Hawken’s Project Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming, and focuses on the opportunities for change involving energy use for individuals and communities. Local group leaders will discuss the project as well as actions that can help to reverse global warming.

Jeannette Downes and Ellen Bialo will return for a talk in The Armchair Traveler series “Exploring Peru,” on Monday, October 28, at 5:30 PM. In April 2019, Jeannette and Ellen traveled through southeastern Peru, spending much of their time in the region of Cuzco near Machu Picchu. They will talk about the people, places, and history of this fascinating and complex country.

Enjoy Spooky Halloween Trivia on Wednesday, October 30, at 6 PM. How well do you know horror movies, bloody events from history and, of course, Halloween treats and tricks?

Spooky Family Night

Spooky Family Movie Night will be held on Friday, October 25, at 6 PM for families with children four and up at the Amagansett Free Library. Horseshoe Crabs

On Saturday, October 26, at 7 PM, the South Fork Natural History Museum will host Dr. John Tanacredi, director of the Center for Environmental Research and Coastal Oceans Monitoring at Molloy College, who will present a talk on the ecology of the horseshoe crab, with a focus on human impacts on horseshoe crabs as well as their habitat on Long Island.

In his talk, Dr. Tanacredi will describe the global conservation effort and actions needed to protect these unique animals both world-wide and here on Long Island. This event is free to the public. For more information, call 631-537-9735 or visit the website at www.sofo.org.

Garlic Planting

The stewards at Quail Hill on Deep Lane, Amagansett, will teach you all you need to know about planting and growing garlic on Saturday, October 26, from 10 AM to noon. Also known as the stinking rose, this versatile vegetable needs to be planted now for harvest next summer. Take part in this stewardship day with the Peconic Land Trust and help prepare cloves for the soil. Led by farm director Layton Guenther, participants will enjoy work songs as they help get this garlic project done. All hands are welcome!

Celebrate the farm season at PLT’s family-friendly open house on Saturday, October 26, from 1 to 4 PM at Bridge Gardens. Plant and bring home bulbs with Summerhill Landscapes, channel your inner creativity with Aaron Goldschmidt of Shine, join the scavenger hunt for holiday recipes throughout the gardens, create a pine cone bird feeder, and more. LVIS Open House

The Ladies’ Village Improvement Society of East Hampton will be hosting a Halloween open house on Saturday, October 26, from 2 to 4 PM. The house and the dollhouse are decorated for the occasion, treats are distributed, and some of our more theatrical members take turns at storytelling. Silent Disco

Just in time for Halloween, the Southampton Arts Center offers a final silent disco for 2019. The Halloween Silent Disco outdoor dance party on Saturday, October 26, will be held from 7 to 11 PM, $10 cover. The fun (and quiet) outdoor rave with headphones features two DJs spinning multiple music genres from the 1970s to today. Participants are invited to come in costume. Prizes will be awarded for best individual and group. Food and beverage will be available for purchase on site through 230 Elm and The Thyme Truck. Haunted Library

East Hampton Library again presents its spooky Haunted Library event on Saturday, October 26, from 7 to 9 PM.

Not for the faint-of-heart, this event is for ages 10 to adult; children younger than 10 will not be admitted. Costumes are encouraged and refreshments will be offered as attendees gather in the library’s Baldwin Family Lecture Room, where the Haunted Library tours begin. The tour takes approximately 15 minutes to complete and attendees should plan to arrive no later than 8:45 PM, but the event will conclude at 9 PM.

Fencing Exhibit

On Sunday, October 27, at 1 PM, the Freemasons of Wamponamon Lodge will be hosting a historical and classical fencing exhibition at the Sag Harbor Whaling Museum. It is free and open to the public, and show the evolution of the European martial art of fencing. You can expect to see demonstrations of a variety of different swords used as early as the 14th Century to as late as the early 20th Century.

The exhibition will be run by Maestro Jared Kirby, with Stephen Solow assisting him. As a Maestro d’Armi (Master of Arms) through the Martinez Academy of Arms, Kirby has nearly 25 years of experience training in historical and classical European martial arts, and teaches martial arts classes. Pumpkin Carving Contest

The Bridgehampton Lions Club is hosting a pumpkin carving contest for all ages on Monday, October 28, at 5 PM, at the Bridgehampton Community House, with tons of different categories (like Area 51, Prehistoric, and Classic Jack with cash prizes and a “massive trophy.” Youngsters can enjoy a puppet show by Liz Joyce of Goat on a Boat Theatre, and cider and donuts will be provided by The Milk Pail. Field Of Jack-O’-Lanterns

Halloween Eve, Wednesday, October 30, from 5 to 6 PM at the Annie Cooper Boyd House at 174 Main Street, Sag Harbor will be extra special this year. People are invited to bring their carved Jack-o’-lanterns, lit with battery-operated candles or tea lights, to the historical society’s house. Participants will gather on the lawn and then the front porch for group photos and then, with Jack-o’-lanterns alight, parade slowly and quietly through the house so as not to disturb any ghostly occupants.

Light refreshments will be served and Nancy Remkus will be on hand, playing Halloween songs. A $5 donation per family would be appreciated.
