Riverhead School Bond

On Tuesday, January 7, the Riverhead Central School District school board unanimously adopted a bond resolution to fund repairs and renovations. District residents can vote on the proposed bond on Tuesday, February 25.

Voting will take place from 6 AM to 9 PM at Riley Avenue, Phillips Avenue, Roanoke Avenue, and Aquebogue elementary schools.

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month, an important time to learn more about this sight-stealing disease. On Wednesday, January 15, from 4 to 5 PM, join Dr. Lawrence Buono, ophthalmologist, to learn how to best preserve your vision and prevent glaucoma.

Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital invites you to attend the eighth installment of the Community Health Education Series on Thursday, January 23, from 4 to 7 PM at Heron Suites in Southold. The lecture speakers will be Jarid Pachter for session one, Paula Montagna, director of clinical nutrition for the hospital at 5:15 PM for session two. No cost to attend. The Shelter Island Public Library will be offering “art projects” for the very young or young at heart on Thursdays, January 16 through February 3, at 11 AM.

Mattituck-Laurel Library

The Mattituck-Laurel Library will host a book discussion on Charles Dickens’s “Bleak House” on Thursday, January 16, at 11 AM and a viewing of the award-winning BBC production.

The library will present the film “Judy,” the story of legendary performer Judy Garland on Friday, January 17, at 1:30 PM.

Do you think you can catch an ice cube? Kids in second and third grades can experiment with “Ice Fishing” on Friday, January 17, at 4 PM. No ice fishing gear needed.

The Cutchogue-New Suffolk, Mattituck-Laurel, and Southold libraries present the Steel Impressions Calypso Band concert on Sunday, January 19, at 2 PM. Join them for this mid-winter Caribbean concert. Tropical refreshments will be served. The concert is free and will be held at the Cutchogue-New Suffolk Library.

Beekeeper Lecture

Local master beekeeper Chris Kelly will present a one-hour lecture on some of the basics of beekeeping on Saturday, January 25, at 7 PM at the Custer Observatory in Southold. He will provide information on purchasing bees and equipment. Kelly will also teach a six-part class beginning January 26. The class will cover what is involved in working with bees, knowing what to look for and what to expect.

Sagamore Hill Talk

As part of the Southold Historical Society’s Winter Lecture Series, the group will be partnering with Peconic Landing to offer a presentation entitled, “Sagamore Hill: Theodore Roosevelt’s Summer White House” on Wednesday, January 22, at 4 PM. Historian Bill Bleyer will offer highlights of his book with the same title. The series will take place at the Peconic Landing auditorium, in Greenport.
