Something to Wine About: Springing into Spring Wines

I recently saw a funny meme regarding jacket selection. It said we’ve entered the, “Wrong jacket season.” No matter which jacket you choose for the weather, you’ll likely be wrong. This is so spot on.
Thankfully, there is a lot more leeway with choosing spring wines. Today we’ll talk about three wines that make a wonderful transition from winter to spring. No jackets required.

Let’s start with a fantastic bottle to celebrate not only spring, but also any special upcoming spring events including communions, confirmations, or Easter. The 2019 Sparkling Pinot Noir Katherine from Macari Vineyards is the perfect choice. It should even impress your Champagne loving friends. This wine is crafted from 100% pinot noir grapes. This gorgeous salmon colored sparkling rosé is aged nine months in tank prior to completing secondary fermentation in bottle. There are notes of raspberry and red apple on the nose. This sparkler has a delicate body with lovely salinity, and notes of shortbread, cherries, and berries on the palate. It has a beautiful creamy mouth feel. This celebration worthy rose retails for $45.

Next, from Pindar, Dr. Dan’s 2024 Dry Riesling. From Dr. Dan’s signature collection, this wine retails for $25.99, and has notes of peach, nectarine, and hints of crisp green apple. It is balanced with a lovely citrus acidity. Despite its dry moniker, though not sweet, it isn’t too dry and refreshingly fruit forward. It is just right for sushi, fish, simple chips and other fun appetizers.

Finally, if you’re ready to fire up your grill, even if it is still a bit chilly at night, Pellegrini Vineyard’s 2023 BBQ Red, retailing for $26.99, is the perfect wine. This wine is made from 100% petit verdot. It is a lovely garnet colored wine, medium bodied, and vibrant. On the palate it has notes of pomegranate and red cherry. While the vineyard’s tasting notes suggest serving this wine slightly chilled, I enjoyed it at room temperature.
