Cops: Teen Rummaging Through Cars on Christmas Eve Arrested
During a party in Hampton Bays on Christmas Eve, a resident called 911 at 10:47 p.m. to report a man had been in the driveway rummaging through vehicles—until he was confronted and ran away, according to police.
Southampton Town police said they set up a perimeter and called in a Suffolk County sheriff’s office K9 unit to contain and locate the man. While the K9 unit was tracking, police received another 911 call, this one from a resident reporting someone in the resident’s back yard. Police responded and the man ran, though he was caught after a brief chase, according to authorities. The first witness, from the party, identified the man as the same person who was rummaging through vehicles, police said, and the man was found with prescription medications, an iPod, cash and marijuana, which he admitted to stealing from a vehicle.
The 18-year-old Hampton Bays man was charged with petty larceny, fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, obstructing governmental administration and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, all misdemeanors, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. He was released on an appearance ticket and is due to appear in court for arraignment.
