Hampton Bays Woman Barbara Tocci Killed in Flanders Road Crash
A 47-year-old Hampton Bays resident, Barbara Tocci, died Thursday morning in Flanders when a utility truck crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the SUV she was driving in, according to police.
The utility truck, a 2005 CMS belonging to PSEG, was headed southbound on Flanders Road when it struck Tocci’s 2000 Ford Explorer head-on, police said. Authorities identified the driver as Michael Pepe, 53 years old.
Tocci was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was transported to the Suffolk County medical examiner’s office. Flanders Northampton Volunteer Ambulance took Pepe to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The road was closed for several hours for an investigation. The New York State police forensic ID and collision reconstruction unit responded to assist. The Suffolk County district attorney’s vehicular crimes bureau also came to the scene.
Flanders Fire Department was also among the emergency responders and the New York State Department of Transportation came to repair damage to the road. The two vehicles involved in the collision were impounded, police said.
No criminal charges are expected.
