10th Annual Artist Birdhouse Auction Kicks off This Saturday
The 10th annual, and final (maybe?), Artist Birdhouse Auction, Bye Bye Birdie, benefiting breast cancer charity Lucia’s Angels is scheduled for this Saturday, October 18 from 5:30–8 p.m. at the Southampton Social Club (256 Elm Street) in Southampton.
A local favorite and one of the major fundraising events of Lucia’s Angels, the Artist Birdhouse Auction began 10 years ago as the brainchild of East End artist, gallerist and breast cancer survivor Karyn Mannix. The successful event continues to help women and families in need, but Mannix announced this year, that after 10 years of auctioning birdhouses, it’s time for a change. The artist said 2014 would be the final year of auctioning birdhouses for the cause, but the annual event will continue next year with a different theme.
That said, while setting up the event on Friday morning, Mannix noted that she was getting feedback from many artists and supporters who want the birdhouse theme to continue. It’s quite possible that local birds will again receive their funky homes next October, but only time will tell.
This year, 100 artists (complete list below) have each donated their talents and creativity to help design a one of a kind birdhouse, which will be auctioned off to raise money for the various cancer support programs.
Lucia’s angels was created in loving memory of Lucia Terzi Bagan, who was a very giving person—not only in the material sense, but also of herself and her heart. It’s no wonder she had so many friends and family surrounding her in her final days, Mannix says in her auction announcement. It was Lucia’s wish that other women and their families could have that same kind of love and support through their toughest times.
Lucia’s Angels has provided help and funding for babysitting, heating bills, health insurance premiums, automobile repair, groceries, ambulatory trips, therapeutic massage, salon services, wigs and more. From special wishes like one more trip to the beach for a terminal patient, to providing extra child-care, to the holding of a hand, Lucia’s spirit and Angels will be there.
