Montauk Food Truck Seeks Kickstarter Funding
Food trucks have begun to take the East End by storm, as fresh eats on-the-go is a perfect complement to any beach excursion. Local Montauk chef Shawn Christman has launched a Kickstarter to fund his new, Montauk-based food truck, the Sea Bean. Backers have until May 9 to help Christman reach his $15,000 goal, and more than $7,365 has already been pledged as of Tuesday, April 28.
Christman is a Culinary Institute of America (CIA) trained chef and Montauk local who hopes to add to the culinary culture of the East End. “I only use seasonal, local ingredients whenever possible,” says Christman, who cites Balsam Farms and Quail Hill among his favorite purveyors. Previously, Christman has cooked at Nick & Toni’s in East Hampton, Topping Rose House in Bridgehampton and the Crow’s Nest in Montauk.
Due to a snafu in the East Hampton bidding process, the Sea Bean does not yet have a permanent location on the East End, but Christman hopes that will be cleared up soon, as he looks forward to bringing his food to hungry beach-goers. “I’m just trying to be a purist and support local food,” he says of his mission.
Money raised by the Kickstarter campaign will largely go toward having the truck pass the Board of Health. Backer incentives range from a “high five” to food items, T-shirts, trucker hats, private meals and more.
