Flanders Road/Route 24 Paving to Resume Thursday
The repaving of State Route 24, aka Flanders Road, which runs from Hampton Bays to Riverhead, will start up again on Thursday.
The $5.2 million repaving project between Lake Avenue and Old Riverhead Road West includes 7 miles of roadway. Last fall, before winter weather set in, paving was completed between Birch Avenue and Old Riverhead Road. Now, the remainder of the work is expected to be completed over a two-month period.
Travel lanes will be shifted so the road can stay open to traffic whole work is going on. Short stretches of Flanders Road will be affected Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., weather permitting. Occasional single lane closures are expected.
The top layer of the worn, distressed pavement will be removed then replaced with new asphalt and fresh pavement markings including bike lane striping and more visible pedestrian crosswalks, according to New York State Assemblyman Fred Thiele.
The project is being undertaken by Rosemar of East Moriches.
