Snowy Owl Roosting in Southampton Village
There’s not a whole lot of action in this video by Christopher Broich, but it’s pretty spectacular to capture a snowy owl on film, especially so close and in the light of day—though it should be noted that these relatively fearless birds do often roost in open areas and full view, in the wind, if you can find one. This isn’t the first to be captured on film in the Hamptons this year.
The footage above features a male snowy owl, which can reach a wingspan of nearly 60 inches. The feed on lemmings and other rodents, and were upgraded from “threatened” to a “vulnerable” conservation status in 2017. You may recognize the species from Hedwig in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books and films.
