Oscar-nominated actress Sally Kirkland was rushed out of an LA film festival and hospitalized after falling, dislocating her ankle and breaking her leg in two places, on Sunday.

Kirkland was walking to the stage at the Studio City Film Festival to receive a Best Actress in a Dramatic Short award when she hit the ground, TMZ reports. According to the gossip site, a rep for Kirkland said the actress blamed the accident on poor lighting in the theater.

An ambulance took her from the scene and she had emergency surgery on Monday to fix her leg.

Kirkland was in Southampton filming a psychological thriller entitled The Awakened in September. Along with the Academy Award-winning actress, the film stars Steven Bauer, John Savage, Ed Furlong, Stelio Savante, Julianne Michelle, Bryan Dechart and Sean Stone.

The Awakened is the story of  Samantha Winston (Michelle), who returns home after 14 years to uncover the truth behind her mother’s death. Winston suspects her father (Savage) of murder and looks to her mother’s friends and relatives, including Lucas Drake (Bauer), Harriet Bendi (Kirkland) and her uncle Thomas (Furlong), for answers. Drake’s business partner (Savante) is not happy about her investigation and seeks to stop Samantha before the town is awakened.

The film does not yet have a release date, but you can watch a trailer (and try to spot the Hamptons locations) below.

Kirkland is still under a doctor’s care. TMZ notes that she is in pain, but the surgery was successful and she is optimistic about her recovery.
