Bernie Madoff's Montauk Beach House, Then And Now
When the Bernie Madoff scandal first happened, I lived in Montauk at a trailer park in Ditch Plains, and I had heard a story about a rich man who frequented the Montauk Yacht Club who was a very nice man, but apparently had just been arrested for being the largest financial criminal the world has ever known.
When the F.B.I. seized his property in Montauk and began to auction off all of his belongings one by one, I decided to go and check it out. The Bernie Madoff story is one of the most fascinating and the most horrible in American financial history. This guy stole money from even the most savvy investors, including a lot of Hamptons residents. His black heart has left him in prison for the rest of his natural life but his former home in Montauk is now being featured in Architectural Digest, and I’m not surprised that it is. Even when I went to check it out in 2009, I was amazed by how far off the ocean it sat, but still remained oceanfront. Here’s a video tour I took four years ago.
Pretty crazy right? You can see today what the new owner Daryl Roth has done with the place by checking out the photos on AD.
