Fridays At Five Returns to the Hampton Library

Old used books

Almost 30 years after it began, the Hampton Library in Bridgehampton has kept its weekly author’s night, Fridays at Five, a beloved summer tradition.

A different notable author speaks at the library every Friday in the summer months, starting with wine and hors d’oeurves cocktail hour provided by Friends of the Hampton Library. The featured author of the evening speaks, answers questions and then signs books, available for purchase, at the end. The $15 admission price and book sale profits all go directly to The Hampton Library.

Here’s just a little taste of what this year’s featured authors have to offer:

Terrence McNally is an award-winning playwright, with an Emmy and Tony, among other prestigious awards. He wrote Frankie and Johnny, Ragtime and The Full Monty, to name a few.

Lily Koppel is the bestselling author of The Astronaut Wives Club. She also has journalism experience with The New York Times, New York magazine, The New York Times Book Review, The Huffington Post and Glamour.

Chris Knopf, a mystery and suspense writer,  has a home right here in Southampton. He has PR expertise and experience as the creative director for Mintz & Hoke Communications group, and has written an impressive number of books, including, but not limited to, Head Wounds, Black Swan, Bad Bird and Short Squeeze.

Peter Wolf’s diversified interests make for intriguing discussion. From an investment manager to a land planner, Wolf’s writing and research are accredited and offer a great deal of education for readers.

Eric Fischl is no stranger to the art world, but now he’s joined the writer’s circle with his hard to put down Bad Boy memoir. With two books and a brilliant career as a painter, Fischl’s journey is one well worth listening to—and reading about.

Morton & Joan Hamburg have been married for over 50 years and their commitment to each other has helped their professional lives as well as their personal lives. Talk about love! Appropriately, they are authors of the book Commitment.

James Salter was a pilot and officer for the United States Air Force. He has awards as not only a novelist, but a short-story and screenwriter, and he recently published his first novel in about three decades, All That Is. Salter also wrote The Hunters and Solo Faces, among other books.

Maryann Calendrille & Kathryn Szoka, owners of Canio’s bookstore in Sag Harbor discuss their book Sag Harbor Is: A Literary Celebration. The book includes a collection of photographs, essays and poems from the past through the present, putting on display the hidden literary talents of Sag Harbor.
