SUV Burns on Sunrise Highway
Southampton and Hampton Bays fire departments extinguished a vehicle fire on Sunrise Highway east of the Shinnecock Canal early Wednesday.
At 12:31 a.m., firefighters responded and found a SUV fully engulfed in flames, Southampton Fire Department 2nd Assistant Chief Chris Brenner said.
“The guys did a great job,” Brenner said of the firefighters, noting that the temperature was in the 20s at the time.
For about an hour, Sunrise Highway was closed between Flanders Road eastbound and Exit 66 eastbound. Brenner said New York State police assisted in directing traffic, and a New York State highway crew was called in to sand the road due to icing.
Southampton Fire Chief Dennis Roy was in charge of the scene.
