Amy Zerner's Fashion Sense: Stars & Stellar Attraction

Reach for the stars!

I’ve always loved stars and have often used them in my designs. The star is a thing of mystery, imagination and adventure. Stars symbolize wishes and good portents. The star gives the feeling of the divine quality bestowed from above. We are like stars on earth, shining with hope.

Astrology in fashion has had its place on both the runway and the streets. Crescent moon charms and flowing tunics with suns and symbols of the zodiac chart adorned hippie fashionistas in the 1970s. Large metal and sparkling star or astrology sign earrings have been popular since the 1940s.

The five-pointed star symbolizes the five physical senses—sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste—and the five elements—spirit, fire, air, water and earth. The five-pointed star, or pentagram, is one of the most potent, powerful and persistent symbols in history. It has been important to almost every ancient culture, from the Mayans of Latin America, to India, China, Greece and Egypt.

Stars have been found scratched on the walls of Neolithic caves, and in Babylonian drawings, marking the pattern the planet Venus makes on its travels- a secret symbol of the Goddess Ishtar. Scriptures, especially Hebrew, are abundant with references to pentagrams.  Another use is from China, and Chinese medicine. It represents the five elements, the five organs, the five stages of change.

Think about symbols you choose to wear that can help you feel beautiful, find courage, embrace qualities of the human spirit and uncover wellsprings of strength and hope, and that will remind you to create harmony and wholeness in your life.

Amy Zerner is the Hamptons number one fashion blogger and fashion designer.

You can find her creations at Bergdorf Goodman in NYC or at The Enchanted World Emporium, 8 Main Street, East Hampton (next to Rowdy Hall Restaurant), 631-324-7695.
