In England, they’re called “fairy cakes.” In Ireland, they’re referred to as “buns.” Australians say “patty cakes.” Whatever you prefer to call them, cupcakes are a convenient treat. And if you show up to a party with a dozen, you’ll be the most popular guest.

Dan’s Papers asked East Enders to vote on their favorite cupcake bakers in the Hamptons and on the South Fork. The results will get your taste buds tingling.

Mary’s Marvelous (207 Main Street, Amagansett, 631-267-8796, marysmarvelous.com) has an ever-changing selection of delectable cupcakes made from scratch. The chocolate cupcake comes with either ganache or vanilla buttercream. The vanilla cupcake comes with chocolate buttercream. And the Mary O, which is gluten free and vegan, is made with chocolate cake and Mary O signature cookie icing. Doesn’t that sound good? No wonder Mary’s Marvelous took the gold in the Hamptons.

Stepping into Ye Olde Bake Shoppe (17 Windmill Lane, Southampton, 631-283-6553) is like stepping into the past. The small storefront is reminiscent of a simpler time, and the smell of all the baked goods on display will bring back memories. Ye Olde Bake Shoppe earned the silver for its classic cupcakes.

Sharing the silver award, Blue Duck Bakery Café (30 Hampton Road, Southampton, 631-204-1701, blueduckbakerycafe.com) opened in 1999. In addition to cupcakes, enjoy Blue Duck’s artisan breads, cakes, cookies, pies and pastries.

Sugar Sugar Custom Cakes (152 Jessup Avenue, Quogue, 631-288-2947 sugarsugarcustomcakes.com) makes unique wedding cakes—and cakes for all occasions—as well as cookies, cake pops and, of course, cupcakes. Sugar Sugar picked up bronze on the South Fork.

The North Fork offers a variety of cupcakes was master bakers.

Since 2002, Junda’s Pastry Crust & Crumbs (1612 Main Road, Jamesport, 631-722-4999 jundaspastry.com) has promised baked goods that are “just like Grandma’s.” After trying Junda’s platinum-winning cupcakes, you’ll want to try the bakery’s babka, flourless chocolate cake, pies, strudel and tarts.

Blue Duck Bakery Café (130 Front Street, Greenport, 631-333-2060; 309 E Main Street, Riverhead, 631-591-2710; 56275 Main Road, Southold, 631-629-4123 blueduckbakerycafe.com) makes the list again for the cupcakes at this family-owned business’s three North Fork locations. This time, Blue Duck takes the gold.

Bronze honors went to Rachel Cronemeyer Cakes & Confections (rachelcronemeyer.com). Rachel Cronemeyer is a Long island native who moved to the North Fork in 2009 and worked under James Beard Award winning pastry chef Claudia Fleming of North Fork Table and Inn. She bakes custom cakes, cupcakes and more.
