Sag Harbor Cinema

The artist April Gornik speaks during a ceremony to relight the newly installed Sag Harbor Cinema sign, Saturday evening on Main Street in Sag Harbor, May 25, 2019. The sign was damaged in December 2016 during a fire that destroyed the cinema and two other adjoining buildings. A fundraising effort, led by Gornik, has led to the rebuilding of the cinema and repair of the original sign.

The streets of Sag Harbor were packed with hundreds of onlookers as the restored Art Deco sign for the Sag Harbor Cinema was lit up for the first time on Saturday, May 25. This marks the first major step in the theater’s restoration since its foundation was laid last year, after the movie house burned down in December 2016. As the countdown ended, and the red neon sign was lit, there was an outpouring of applause, cheers, and emotional reactions as a community, already close-knit, became even closer.
