Southampton Hospital Is Two-Time Award-Winner

Healthgrades’ Labor and Delivery Excellence Award puts Stony Brook Southampton Hospital in top 10 percent of all hospitals for exceptional care of mothers.

Stony Brook Southampton Hospital is a recipient of Healthgrades’ Labor and Delivery Excellence Award for the second year in a row.

This distinction places Stony Brook Southampton Hospital in the top 10 percent of all hospitals evaluated for the exceptional care of mothers during and after labor and delivery, according to Healthgrades, the leading online resource for information about physicians and hospitals.

“We are very proud of our maternity center’s experienced team of doctors, nurses, and staff, and the commitment and care they provide. As the only maternity center on the South Fork of Long Island, we average 770 births a year,” said Dr. Fredric Weinbaum, the chief medical officer/chief operating officer of Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. “When needed, we have a medical transport program with a specially-trained team to care for the baby on route to Stony Brook University Hospital, which provides the most advanced neonatal specialty care in the region.”

To help consumers evaluate and compare hospital performance in labor and delivery, Healthgrades analyzed patient outcomes data for virtually every hospital in each of the 15 states that provide all-payer state data from 2015 to 2017. Healthgrades found that the variation in hospital performance makes a significant difference in terms of clinical outcomes.

“Our maternity center is family-focused with private labor/delivery rooms designed to provide a compassionate, supportive, comfortable, and medically-safe birthing environment,” said Linda DeZubiria, nurse manager of The Kathleen D. Allen Maternity Center at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. “Each is equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring capabilities for mother and baby. We also have 24-hour pediatric care, in-house lactation consultants, and facilitate the non-separation of mother and baby.”

From 2015 to 2017, if all hospitals included in the analysis performed similarly to those that received the Healthgrades Labor and Delivery Excellence Award, complications could have potentially been avoided for 105,690 patients.

“Stony Brook Southampton Hospital has the lowest primary cesarean section rate — 16 percent — in the metropolitan area. We have a dedicated, specially-equipped state-of-the-art operating room located directly in the maternity center,” said Dr. Vito Alamia vice chair and service chief, ob-gyn at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. “We also have zero percent elective induction at less than 39 weeks.”

In addition to receiving its second straight Labor and Delivery Excellence Award, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital has also been recognized as a five-star recipient for vaginal delivery and C-section delivery five years in a row, since 2015. The hospital is a participant in the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ Safe Motherhood Initiative. The SMI works with more than 10,000 healthcare providers and 115 birthing facilities to develop and implement standard approaches for handling obstetric emergencies associated with maternal mortality and morbidity, with a focus on the three leading causes of maternal death — obstetric hemorrhage (severe bleeding), venous thromboembolism (blood clots), and severe hypertension in pregnancy (high blood pressure).

“We commend those hospitals that have achieved the Healthgrades 2019 Labor and Delivery Excellence Award for the exceptional care they provide for mothers during labor and delivery,” said Healthgrades’ Chief Medical Officer Dr. Brad Bowman. “The birth of a child is one of life’s most significant milestones. Expectant parents should research and select a hospital with the highest clinical outcomes for the delivery of their baby.”
