Two Severely Burned in Bridgehampton Fire Pit Explosion

By T. E. McMorrow

Two people suffered “severe burns” after a fire pit exploded at a residence at 19 Kellis Way in Bridgehampton early Saturday evening. Investigators believe the explosion may have “occurred during the fueling process,” Southampton Town Fire Marshal Chris Hansen said Monday.

The victims, a man and a woman who were not otherwise identified, “were airlifted by a Suffolk County Aviation Unit to Stony Brook University’s Burn Unit in serious condition,” according to the Southampton Town police. Bridgehampton Fire Department emergency service personnel treated them at the scene.

According to Hansen, it is his understanding that both remain in the hospital’s burn unit. One of them, he believes, was the homeowner, the other, a city resident visiting.

Others at the residence were burned, as well, but none as badly as the two taken to Stony Brook, it appears from police reports. The Sag Harbor Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to assist, as well.

The fire was already extinguished when police and the Fire Department arrived. There was little damage to the house.

Hansen said the explosion is still under investigation. He said the incident occurred on the second-floor deck, where the fire pit, fueled by ethanol, is located.

Kellis Way, just south of Montauk Highway, east of Hayground, is a small, gated cul-de-sac that allows access to estates on the northeast side of Kellis Pond, most of which front the pond. Donald Trump Jr. has a house next door.

The six-bedroom six and a half-bath house stands on a 1.3 acre waterfront property and, according to the Compass real estate website, is on the market for about $5.5 million.
