It may seem a bit early to think about Christmas, but if the displays at K-Mart, Target and other superstores are any indication, we should already be buying ornaments, trees, lights and those little snowy villages that live beneath them. And it’s not even Halloween yet.
Still, maybe the consumer gods know something we don’t, and if it’s time to buy trees and lights and ornaments and little snowy villages, maybe it’s also time to buy the gifts that go with them. And the most important gifts for keeping the spirit of Christmas live are most certainly those for our favorite little ones, whether their our own children, nieces and nephews or grandchildren. That means it’s time to visit your local toy store!
Here are the Hamptons best toy stores of 2016, according to Dan’s Papers readers.

Last year’s Gold winner for Dan’s Best of the Best toy store, Kites of the Harbor (75 Main Street, Sag Harbor, 631-725-9063) won the coveted Platinum award in 2016. The shop offers an interesting selection of toys, games and activities for kids to enjoy year-round, including kites, masks, plush toys, action figures, pranks and gags, and a variety of fun, campy goodies. It’s been visited by two of Marvel’s movie Avengers: Iron Man Robert Downey Jr. and Ant-Man Paul Rudd, and even Jimmy Fallon stops by from time to time.
Stevenson’s Toys and Games (68 Jobs Lane, Southampton, 631-283-2111, stevensonstoys.com) has one of the largest selections of toys on the East End. The recipient of the Best of the Best toy store Gold award for the South Fork, Stevenson’s carries nearly 10,000 different items, including unique artworks, and the kind of fun and educational toys not found anywhere else around, along with many of the mainstream toys advertised on TV. The store has a wide selection of European toys, such as PlayMobil and Schleich, as well as Star Wars figures, Lego, superheroes, cars and boardgames.
Silver winner for the second consecutive year, Hildreth’s East Hampton (109 Pantigo Road, East Hampton 631-329-8800, hildreths.com) has a great selection of high quality items for kids to enjoy. They offer grand play tents and homes, well made crafts, plush toys, role play items, costumes and games, all from boutique vendors.
Second Star to the Right (Bridgehampton Commons, 2044 Montauk Highway #11, Bridgehampton) won the 2016 Bronze award for Dan’s Best of the Best toy store. Unfortunately, the store closed recently, but its award is well deserved.
