Give Blood On Thursday In Southampton And Get A Free Cookie. Oh, You'll Probably Save Somebody's Life Too!

By David Rattiner

A blood donation truly is a “gift of life” that a person can do for his fellow man, and he can also get a free cookie at then end of the donation.

So whether you are doing it for the cookies or for the fact that it’s the right thing to do, head down there and do it. Southampton Hospital is hosting its Fall Blood Drive in the Hospital’s third floor Teaching Center this Thursday. Donors must be 17-76 years old, at least 110 lbs., in good health, and must bring a photo ID and their Social Security number. Donors receive a $5 cafeteria voucher. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are available. Call (631)-726-8336.

From one unit of blood, red blood cells can be extracted for use in trauma or surgical patients. Plasma, the liquid part of blood, is administered to patients with clotting problems. The third component of blood, platelets, clot the blood when cuts or other open wounds occur, and are often used in cancer and transplant patients.
