Van Takes Out Utility Pole on Tuckahoe Road
The driver of a Chevy van was able to get out of the vehicle on his own after he crashed into a utility pole and the pole snapped, according to fire officials.
Southampton Fire Department Second Assistant Chief Chris Brenner said firefighters were called to Tuckahoe Road across from the Stony Brook Southampton campus Thursday at 4:05 p.m. for a report that live wires came down on a vehicle after an accident.
The van had front-end damage, mostly on the passenger side, and the pole broke both at the base and a few feet higher up.
Southampton Volunteer Ambulance took the driver to Southampton Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Fire police closed the road for about one and a half hours.
Stony Brook University police are handling the investigation, Brenner said.
The new Long Island power utility, PSEG, came to replace the pole and many went without electricity as the lines were raised.
