A motorist who drove around the barricades closing Dune Road Tuesday afternoon called 911 when his SUV began to sink and float into Shinnecock Bay, according to police.

The road had been closed due to severe flooding Tuesday, when a nor’easter battered Southampton Town.

Southampton Town police and bay constables responded to the area and found the 63-year-old Riverhead man in his disabled 2008 Mercedes-Benz, which he had attempted to drive west on Dune Road.

Bay constables arrived first and helped the driver from his vehicle. Hampton Bays Fire Department and Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance were also on scene. No injuries were reported.

Shoreline Towing removed the SUV from the bay. Police said they determined no criminality was involved.
