Few Surprises In Local School Votes

Voters in all school districts across the East End approved budgets and all propositions that were on the ballots — with one notable exception, a turf field in Mattituck — in voting on May 21.

In the East Hampton School District, former board member Sandra Vorpahl was elected along with two incumbents, Wendy Geehreng and James Foster, while challenger Jeff Erickson fell short.

In Springs, two incumbents, David Conlon and Amy Rivera, were reelected, defeating challengers Joseph Sullivan and Deborah Goodman. Incumbents Kristen Peterson, Anna Bernasek, and William Muchnic defeated challengers Mary Eames and Matthew Feyh in Amagansett.

Incumbent Jennifer Vinski led all vote-getters in Bridgehampton, and will be joined on the board by Carla Lillie, a first-time candidate who bested incumbent Michael Gomberg, Angela Torres Chmielewski, and Randall Davis.

Incumbent Chris Tice and newcomer Yorgos Tsibiridis led the way in Sag Harbor and will each serve three-year terms. Incumbent Brian DeSesa won a one-year term. Julian Barrowcliffe, Thomas McErlean, and Caleb Kercheval came up short.

Incumbent Donald King and challenger Charles Styler were elected to the Southampton School Board, besting Leslie Duroseau and Charles Styler.

Incumbents Lauren Battista and Steve Failla were reelected in Quogue and will be joined on the board by Paul Bass, who defeated incumbent Barbara Sartorius.

Voters in Riverhead returned incumbent board member Laurie Downs and also elected Matthew Wallace. Jerome Bost and incumbent Elizabeth Silva fell short.

In the Mattituck-Cutchogue School District, voters handily approved the budget and other propositions, but rejected a proposal to spend $1.16 million for an artificial turf field at Mattituck High School by a better than two-to-one margin. Two newcomers, George Haase and Jennifer Anderson, were elected to the school board, while incumbent Sara Hassildine fell short.

In all other districts, incumbents or new candidates won in uncontested races.
