As part of the Friday on the Porch series, the Sag Harbor Historical Society will host “The Unusual Jewish History of the Hamptons” on Friday, July 12, from 5 to 6:30 PM.

Karl Grossman, a Long Island journalist and journalism professor at SUNY/Old Westbury, will give the talk. An entrance fee, which includes refreshments, is $20.

Surfrider Foundation

The Surfrider Foundation will host a beach cleanup at Edward Ecker Jr. County Park in Montauk on Friday, July 12, at 6 PM.

Participants are asked to bring their own buckets, reusable gloves, and drinkware.

Rogers Memorial Library Programs

Gail Pudaloff, an exercise and kinetic therapist, will give a presentation at the Rogers Memorial Library in Southampton on Friday, July 12, at 10:30 AM. Pudaloff will talk about the “prehab” exercises that will help one regain strength after surgery.

With the Southampton History Museum, the library will offer a talk titled “Three Times at the Brink: When the Cold War Could Have Gone Nuclear” on July 15 at 5:30 PM.

Michael A. Barnhart, Ph.D., an expert in the history of American foreign relations and politics, will discuss how the United States and the Soviet Union stood at the brink of nuclear war during the Cold War and what can be learned from it now.

Jackie Scerbinksi, a professor and director of fashion at the City University of New York, will give a talk on “The British Invasion: Sixties Style,” in which she will discuss London’s mod style and its influence on fashion in the U.S., on July 17 at 12 PM.

David Alpern, a reporter, writer, and senior editor for Newsweek, will talk about his life in news and entertainment on July 18 at 5:30 PM. Alpern, who has conducted more than 5000 interviews with government leaders, medical experts, and others, will discuss and present clips of high points from those recorded exchanges and offer his thoughts about the media then and now.

SoFo Summer Gala & Programs

SoFo will host a “Lost Ladybug Search” at Quail Hill Farm in Amagansett on July 16 from 10 AM to 12 PM.

Dr. Leslie Allee of Cornell University will lead participants in the annual search for the rare nine-spotted ladybug, New York State’s official insect, found on Long Island only at Quail Hill Farm. Participants can look for and gently capture ladybugs to be identified and then released. The program is free. For more information on the “Lost Ladybug Project,” visit www.lostladybugrescue.com.

Jackie Avignone will lead an “Algal Blooms: What Are They/Environmental Impacts/How You Can Help?” lecture for adults on July 17 at 7 PM. Attendees can learn about the ins and outs of harmful algal blooms, as well as the causes and effects of them. The presentation will include a biological background on algae and the species native to our waters, as well as the difference between harmful and not harmful algae.

There will be an art workshop for adults and teenagers over 15 years old on July 18 from 10 AM to 1 PM at SoFo.

Muriel Appelbaum, an artist, will lead the workshop suitable for beginner and experienced drawers. Participants should bring a 9”x12” drawing pad with a hard back for support as well as two drawing implements, such as a soft, dark pencil, conté crayon, or ballpoint pen.

Southampton History Museum

Ghost hunters can join the Long Island Paranormal Investigators as they investigate the Rogers Mansion on Saturday, July 13, from 8:30 to 11 PM. The program will start with a short introduction to paranormal investigating and examples of the LIPI’s most spooky findings.

Tickets are $30 per person, and space is limited to 20 people. Payment is required upon registering. Attendees must be 15 years or older and anyone under the age of 18 is required to have a parent or guardian present.

By The Light Of The Moon

The Friends of the Long Greenbelt Pond and the South Fork Natural History Museum will host a Full Buck Moon Hike on Tuesday, July 16, from 9 to 10 PM.

Dai Dayton will lead the leisurely-paced hike through open-field trails. Light refreshments will follow the hike. Participants will meet at the SoFo Museum parking lot on the Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike in Bridgehampton.

FLGP will sponsor one of its regular cleanups of its adopted road, Old Farm Road in Bridgehampton, on July 20 from 8 to 9 AM. The Friends will provide bags, but ask volunteers to bring their own gloves.

There will also be a hike to the Truman Capote Stone on July 28 from 9 to 10:30 AM. The moderately paced 3-mile hike, which will be led by Dayton, will meet at the Long Pond Greenbelt Nature Center on the Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike in Bridgehampton.
