Suffolk Theater Celebrates Jazz History Month

In recognition of Jazz Appreciation Month, our newly opened Suffolk Theater in Riverhead is pleased to present a roster of awesome jazz bands and tributes for young and older, alike.
Now in its 12th year, Jazz Appreciation Month‘s latest theme is “The Spirit and Rhythms of Jazz.” Since 2002, The Smithsonian National Museum of American History has highlighted jazz music and accomplishments during the month of April. Governors impressed by the attention given to Black History Month in February have since followed the Smithsonian‘s lead and declared April as Jazz Appreciation Month. Myriad events throughout the month spotlight the great artists, amazing and creative music and cross-cultural appeal of jazz across the nation.
Though Count Basie died in 1984, his name and accomplishments live on. Celebrate his legacy at the Suffolk Theater this Sunday April 7 at 2 p.m. when The Count Basie Orchestra leads a list of big band performances celebrating Jazz Appreciation Month.
Known as “The Swingiest Band in All the Land,” this 17 Grammy Award-winning big band will perform musical selections, like “April in Paris,” that all music lovers will enjoy. Songs from The Count Basie Orchestra’s latest recordings of “Count Basie is Back” and “Ray Charles Sings Basie Swings” will surely be included.
In addition, make sure to get tickets for the Stan Kenton Alumni Band on Monday, April 15. Kenton is one of jazz’s top cult figures and always puts his own interpretation on stage. Then, come hear Tito Puente, Jr. as he leads an All Star Tribute to Lionel Hampton on Saturday April 20 at 8 p.m. Finally, on April 28 at 2 p.m., the Vinnie Cutro Quartet will play a birthday tribute to Duke Ellington.
These amazing bands and their creative improvisations and arrangements must be heard by all music enthusiasts! This is a perfect venue and the incredible delectables cooked up by in-house Chef Tom Schaudel are equally top-notch. So, indulge in Schaudel’s culinary creations and enjoy some outstanding jazz music at the Suffolk Theater. Let the spirit of jazz mingle with your soul all month long.
