Looking for a unique meal or hors d’oeuvre to serve at your next Hamptons holiday soiree? Look no further.
East Hampton’s Gula Gula Empanadas has created a seasonal holiday empanada using butternut squash, pears, cranberries, shallots, goat cheese and sage in their always-delicious whole wheat crust. It comes in both small and regular size and is available to order through the month of December.
You may recognize Gula Gula from farmers markets in East Hampton, Sag Harbor and Bridgehampton during the summer, as well as SagTown Coffee year round. Started by Luchi Masliah, a native of Uruguay, in East Hampton last year, Gula Gula draws from the flavors and cooking of her home country and neighboring Chile and Argentina. But she also creates more imaginative, and less traditional, empanada fare, such as Indian spiced potatoes and spinach, Southwestern chicken baked in a crust made of corn flour, or this month’s holiday offering.
“It’s just our local produce this time of year,” Masliah says, explaining that it’s traditional to make empanadas from seasonal local produce and meats, but she also pulled inspiration from side dishes served this time of year.
Gula Gula’s empanadas are 100 percent artisanal, unprocessed and made with meat without hormones or antibiotics. She serves a wide array of options with bison, chicken and fish, including a breakfast empanada, spinach and Feta, dipping sauce, and much more.
Empanadas make a perfect self contained meal or they can be paired with a salad or soup for a fast and tasty lunch or dinner. Pass around mini empanadas as hors d’oeuvres at your next party or gathering with friends. You can buy them frozen too!
As Masliah points out, having wine and empanadas is a wonderful and festive way of entertaining down in Uruguay. Why not try it here?
