Man Slashed with Machete in Springs
East Hampton Town police responded to reports of two men fighting in the roadway on Clinton Street in Springs Monday evening and arrived to find that a man was slashed with a machete and seriously wounded.
The 26-year-old machete victim, who is a resident of Clinton Street, was taken to Southampton Hospital before being transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital for surgery, police said.
The machete wielding man, identified as 24-year-old Jose Javier Garces Hernandez, of East Hampton, had fled the scene of the fight before officers arrived, according to police, but he was later found at a Springs Fireplace Road residence. East Hampton Volunteer Ambulance treated him for injuries before he was airlifted to Stony Brook for further medical attention.
Garces Hernandez is charged with second-degree assault, a felony, and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, a misdemeanor. He will be arraigned at East Hampton Town Justice Court.
