Amy Zerner's Fashion Sense: Sheer Fun
One of the lovelier looks of the season is chiffon, known for its versatility, beauty and—because of the sheer nature of the fabric—its ethereal intrigue. Chiffon clothing is a fashion trend currently in high demand and, the best part is, it makes you look like a goddess.
From subtle to the sexual, from the monochromatic to the colorful, sheer fabric is made to lightweight and semi-transparent, and can be made from silk, cotton, or synthetics.
Historically, women have always used sheer fabrics, aces and chiffons for gowns and skirts, and as layering for traditional wedding dresses. Chiffon layers were originally worn over evening dresses, to give women’s gowns a floaty quality while accentuating femininity. It has also been traditionally used in lingerie, blouses, and accessories, such as wraps and scarves.
Sheer chiffon blouses are very popular right now, and can be dressed up with colorful pants and heels, or kept casual with a long tank top and leggings. My favorite thing about a chiffon top, wrap or tunic is that, although slightly loose-fitting and flowing, the sheer nature of the fabric shows curves while maintaining a semi-transparent subtle elegance. Pairing a white sheer shirt with a black lacy tank top and black pants gives you a suggestive silhouette with a twist – perfect for going the office or for a special night out.
The fabric is also often used in skirts. Wear it with a three-quarter sleeve, solid color cotton top and sexy sandals, and you’ve got the makings for a fabulous and feminine outfit. Nothing can make a woman feel prettier than a flattering chiffon skirt or gown, and they’re perfect for any occasion: dinner out, a summer picnic or music concert. A classy chiffon skirt never goes out of style.
