Eat Dan's Best of the Best North Fork Mexican Food on Cinco de Mayo
With just one week until Cinco de Mayo, it’s time to plan for the year’s biggest night of tequila shots, margaritas and Mexican food. Of course, in-the-know East Enders look to Dan’s Best of the Best for everything great on the Twin Forks, so we’ll be exploring the best of all things Mexican over the next seven days.
We begin our planning with Dan’s Best of the Best 2014 winners for Mexican food on the North Fork.
But before the fun begins, make sure to understand exactly what we’re celebrating.
Cinco de Mayo (aka the Fifth of May) acknowledges the Mexican militia’s unexpected defeat of their French occupiers in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The day is point of pride for Mexicans and has become a great celebration of their culture here in the United States, though in Mexico it’s more recognized by their Puebla region. Cinco de Mayo is not, as many believe, Mexican Independence Day. That day, which is actually the country’s most important national holiday, falls on September 16. Read more about it at mexonline.com.
Now, back to the partying.
Platinum
True to its name, Lucharitos at 119 Main Street in Greenport (631-722-3655) is loaded with imagery of authentic Mexican wrestlers, called luchadors, throughout the bar. But, our voters say Lucharitos drop-kicks the competition because of its great food, drink and atmosphere. Try the Empanada of the Day, a wide variety of tacos and treats such as the Superfly Snuka—delicious BBQ roast pork topped with pineapple salsa, and named for the great, high-flying Hawaiian professional wrestler Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka. Visit lucharitos.com for more info.
Gold
Funchos at 1156 West Main Street in Riverhead (631-369-7277) brings fantastic Tex-Mex to the North Fork. Opened by the former owners of a dental lab, you’d never know they weren’t lifetime restaurateurs. Enjoy Cinco de Mayo with hand-rolled burritos, quesadillas, tacos, fajitas and all the Tex-Mex staples done right. Visit funchosfajitagrill.com.
Silver
Our silver winner, Blue Agave, formerly at 40 East Main Street in Riverhead, is unfortunately closed, but adventurous eaters should visit DansBOTB.com to find, and hopefully nominate, the North Fork’s next Dan’s Best of the Best Mexican eateries in 2015!
