Shop 'til You Drop: Beauty and Foodie Essentials on the East End
Staying in shape is always in season! Labor Day weekend ushered in what many call “Local Summer,” when the weather is still warm enough for you to enjoy the beach, and you can also make a left onto Montauk Highway. Soak up the sun on the water with stand up paddleboarding (SUP) fitness classes or SUP barre classes through Elements Fitness. Paddleboarding is a total body workout, building core strength and arm strength, as well as increasing balance. Classes will be held during the fall, weather permitting. Of course, Elements will offer their signature barre classes throughout the off-season at the studio at 66 Newtown Lane, Suite 11, East Hampton. Visit elementsfitnessstudio.com or call 631-604-5445 for additional information. Sweat on!
Stock up on organic beauty products at LURKshop (28 West Water Street, Sag Harbor), where the End of Season Sale will be continuing through October 1. Also on the beauty front, Living Proof has launched its first dry shampoo (sephora.com $22) and it actually cleans hair—versus simply masking odor and oil. What does that mean for you? Unlike others that leave behind a residue, forcing you to wash your hair soon after, this one will give you a just-washed feel well into the next day.
When you are ready to suds up, Oribe has launched Bright Blonde Shampoo for Beautiful Color as well as a corresponding conditioner. For blonde and highlighted hair, it doesn’t get any better. The formulation has violet pigments to cancel out yellow and brassy tones, restoring blonde and silver hair to a vibrant state. You’ll also get antioxidant-rich botanicals for moisture and UV protection (oribe.com $44 for the shampoo and $46 for the conditioner) and, of course, like everything from J.Lo’s go-to stylist, these new launches smell fantastic.
Speaking of UV protection, don’t forget that protecting your skin is a year-round essential as the skin cancer-causing UVA rays are just as strong rain or shine. iS Clinical Extreme Protect SPF 30 (dermstore.com, $68) offers next level protection via a formulation that includes powerful DNA protectants to prevent damage while treating existing fine lines and wrinkles. It absorbs quickly without leaving a chalky residue, meaning you’re not only likely to apply it once, but re-apply per dermatologist recommendations every two hours.
Another year-round essential? Dove Advanced Care Anti-Perspirant/Deodorant offers odor and wetness protection and moisturizes skin. It’s available in a number of scents (CVS, 111 Main Street, Southampton, $4.99-6.49) and they’ve also launched an anti-perspirant spray ($5.49).
Tackle another scent issue with Poo Pourri (Gone Local, 80 North Main Street, East Hampton, $9.95). The brand makes blends of all-natural essential oils that you spray in the toilet. The oils create a protective barrier on the toilet water’s surface (basically a film), which traps unpleasant bathroom odors beneath the surface. Not a bad hostess gift idea—for someone you’re really good friends with.
Alternatively you could opt for a candle. Space NK (spacenk.com) has a slew of them including one they are launching for the holidays that’s a long lasting Shimmering Spice scent. Like everything the brand stocks, it smells and looks as great as it works.
If you’re burned out from too much holiday entertaining over the summer checkout Blue Apron (blueapron.com), which now delivers nationwide. The brand takes the hassle out of cooking by delivering all the ingredients that you need to make delicious meals in exactly the right proportions. You can specify dietary restrictions and opt for a single delivery or ongoing service (about $10 per meal).
Snacking-wise I heart Keenwah’s Quinoa Puffs (Shelter Island IGA, 75 North Ferry Road, Shelter Island), is one of the newest health foods to launch. The brand has turned quinoa, the wellness favorite, into “chip” form. The puffs are actually little delicious crunch balls made with quinoa flour. All flavors, which include Sea Salt Truffle, Aged Cheddar, Sweet Chili, and Herbes de Provence, are certified gluten-free, non-GMO and vegan.
