The Hampton Theatre Company will hold open auditions for “Lost in Yonkers,” Neil Simon’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning tender comic masterwork about two young boys coming of age in a zany family of colorful characters in the “City of Gracious Living” in 1942.
Auditions are Sunday and Monday, January 24 and 25, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Quogue Community Hall on Jessup Avenue in Quogue. Both union and non-union actors are invited to attend.
Hampton Theatre Company is seeking actors for the roles of:
JAY KURNITZ (15-17, lead) – A Jewish boy living in an apartment over the family “Kandy Store” in Yonkers with his brother Arty, his nutty Aunt Bella and his forbidding grandmother. Of the two brothers, he is the mature and serious one, trying to be strong for his family.
ARTY KURNITZ (13-15, lead) – The observer of the family, Arty copes by going with the flow and cracking jokes. Less mature than Jay.
EDDIE KURNITZ (40s) – Arty and Jay’s father, forced to leave his boys with his stern mother so he can go on the road to try to earn money. Stressed and nervous.
GERT KURNITZ (40s) – One of Arty and Jay’s aunts who becomes so nervous when visiting her mother that she sucks in air for the first part of a sentence and exhales it on the second part, creating a very peculiar affect.
The roles of Bella, Grandma and Louie are cast.
Rehearsals for Lost in Yonkers begin in early February, with performances running from March 31 through April 17, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons, at the Quogue Community Hall. George Loizides directs.
